I'm not sure how to really explain it but I like my colours to 'lean' into one point of the colour wheel! For example, when I'm tinting with purple and want to choose a shade of red, I'll choose a slightly more magenta shade instead of a pure red. When I choose darker shades, I also tend to move the wheel to the direction of the tint colour I want.
Play around with saturation too! Some people make darker spots more saturated and some (like me) make them more desaturated or grayish. When it comes to outlines, I usually try to make them easy to see unless I'm doing a hack for hair or clothes. There's nothing wrong with light outlines if you like them, I just don't use it personally.
This is a very optional thing but if you still struggle, try taking a screenshot of your pony and use any editing software to turn it greyscale. If you think the pony looks too muddy or a LOT the shades of greys look like they're all blending together, you can try adjusting the colours at the appropriate areas.
Of course, these are just tips on how I personally make them so don't feel obligated to use them. Sorry if you don't get it because I'm really bad at explaining things ^_^"
